Early influences

George’s grandfather, Frank Russell, founded the original Frank Russell Company in Tacoma in 1936.

Frank and George had much in common, as you can see here at George’s wedding to Jane Thompson.

George’s father, George Russell Sr., was an inventor with more than 100 patents to his credit, including a process for gluing wood together electronically.

George was captain of his high school wrestling team at Exeter.

George also joined the Mountaineering Club at Exeter, supervised by world-class climber and explorer, Bob Bates.

Bob Bates, George and Charlie Houston. George remained lifelong friends with Bob Bates. Charlie was one of Bob’s climbing partners on both historic attempts to scale K-2. Charlie was also the physician who advised George to stop worrying about heart problems and “do things!”

George’s wrestling career continued at Stanford University.

Making a cold call?

Paul Kaltinick was Treasurer at JCPenney when he received George’s call out of the blue. He later joined George as head of Frank Russell Trust Company in 1980, when this picture was taken.

In 1971, George's peers laughed when he predicted that they soon would be investing internationally—and in real estate. Shown here are George's handwritten notes for his famous speech at the Treasurer's Club in New York City. See line 6 from the top for the references to the two new asset classes.

Smooth transition

Security is always an issue on 20-20 trips. This was particularly true on the first trip to Eastern Europe.
